Set for Success
By Joe Siegel MSed, SPORTIME Volleyball Director

There are currently thousands of volleyball players on Long Island, young and old, male and female. With the explosion of indoor winter leagues and summer beach tournaments, players are now striving to constantly improve their games.

One of the most difficult but crucial skills to practice and master is setting. While most players enjoy spiking the ball straight down into the opponents court for a point, without a clean, accurate set, an effective attack is not possible.

Here are a few tips to help you improve your setting skills:

1. Always contact the ball with both hands above the head. This will allow you to set the ball either front or back with good power, and it will also help you avoid being called for a carry.

2. Try to use as many fingers as possible on the ball. Your thumbs on the ball will help you control the direction of the ball and will also help you avoid having the ball contact just your four fingers and roll backwards.

3. Upon execution of the set, extend your arms forward like you are "flying" in the direction of the ball. This will help you get the ball to your intended target.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice!!!
